It takes a person to read a glacier: meet the woman behind cryosphere data in Uzbekistan

High in the mountains of Pskem valley, scientists are tracking changes of Barkrak Glacier — one of Uzbekistan's most vital and vulnerable high-altitude environments. At the heart of this work is Muhabbat Sodikova, a field technician whose experience and local knowledge have made her an essential part of glacier monitoring and community outreach under the GEF-UNDP-UNESCO Cryosphere Project. 

Muhabbat's path to glaciology began long before the project existed. In 2002, she joined the high-mountain Oygaing meteorological station, roughly 2,100 metres above sea level, as a meteorological technician. For almost 15 years, she trekked to the site every three hours, day and night, to record temperature, precipitation and snow cover.
